Week #11 -- Father's Day -- June 16, 2013

Highlights submitted thus far by Kings, Stingers, Green Machine, Bombers, NWC

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire- Chick Veditz
Game 1: Green Machine 3 (WP-Bob Mellonee 2-7)  Stingers 2 (LP-Larry Newman 4-8)

Green Machine's regular game 1 pitcher Andy Peksa was suspended for game 1, so GMs ace Bob Mallonee took the mound for game 1 for the first time this year. GM got the early lead in the first inning with a 1 out walk from Jeff Kapper followed by an RBI double from the big lefty bat of Jonathan Stacey. The green men added to the lead in the 3rd inning, when Mallonee started the inning with a single. Lead off hitter Josh Vaeth followed with a single and Kapper hit into a fielders choice to get runners on the corners. Stacey came through again with an RBI single and after a Brad Verbosky pop out, Billy Giles hit a clutch RBI double to score Kapper. The GM bats went cold after that inning, failing to put on any more runs for the rest of the game. However, the star of the day was Mallonee on the mound. After getting a big strike out in the 5th inning, 2 unearned runs were scored in the top of the 6th on 2 throwing errors. In the top of the 7th inning, the Stingers slugger Stu hit a lead off double to get the tying run in scoring position. Mallonee got the Stingers to hit to fly outs, one of which moved Stu over to 3rd base. With 2 outs and the tying run on 3rd, Mallonee blew a high fastball past the Stingers hitter for a game winning strikeout.

Stingers opened the day against the Green Machine (GM) for the second time this year. Larry Newman threw and excellent game, but it was the bats of the Stingers that were quiet for the game. In the t-1st, learning a new umpire, the Stingers let GM out to a 3-0 lead after 3 innings of play. IN the b-th, the Stingers tried jump-start their game. Matt Friedman hit a powerful 3 footer to get things going followed by Gary Bosley dropping one in to get Friedman around to third. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, Larry Newman and Friedman tried to make something happen, but Friedman drew the ball too much and was called out at the plate. With two outs, Brett Eisenberg drove a screamer into right and the Stingers would plate 2 to make it a 3-2 game, but that would be all the Stingers would be able to offensively produce.

Green Machine Do Gooders:
Jeff Kapper: 1-2, 1 BB, 2 R
Jonathan Stacey: 2-3, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Billy Giles: 1-3, 1 2B, 1 RBI

Game 2:  Green Machine 4 (WP-Bob Mellonee 3-7)  Stingers 2 (LP-Larry Newman 4-9)

Game 2 was very similar to the first as Newman continued pitching a gem of a day. In the t-2nd John Alkire jump on base and Jame Engler plated the Stingers first run with his rbi double to take the lead 1-0 after two. In the third inning it was the Stingers on both side of the game. In the top, Eisenberg jumped on base by fielder’s choice, followed by Rob Elrich’s sizzling double and then SAC by Stuart Sheridan to make it a 2-0 lead. Defensively with runners on all the base and one out, the Stingers’ Rob Elrich and Sean Flynn flashed a brilliant double play to close the inning and protect their lead. Unfortunately that was all the Stingers came up with on the day letting the day slip away to GM.

Green Machine decided to stick with the hot arm for game 2, convincing Mallonee to pitch a 2nd game for the first time in his career with the team. The Stingers were able to get 1 run in the 2nd inning and another in the 3rd inning to take the early 2-0 lead. The GM bats stayed cold for most of the game, going scoreless for the first 4 innings of the game. In the 5th inning, GM rookie Mike Silverman returning from a week 1 injury, was able to get a 1 out double, his second double of the day. The hobbling Winkel hit a fly out for the second out of the inning, but a Rodney Baysmore was followed by Mallonee reaching base on an error from the Stingers. With the bases loaded, Vaeth hit a clutch 2 RBI single to score Silverman and Baysmore as GM tied the game at 2-2. GM came back hot in the 6th inning when Peksa lined a lead off single, and clean up hitter Stacey came up big once again when he roped a line drive to right field. The Stingers right fielder attempted a diving catch, but missed the ball which then rolled all the way to the fence. With Stacey's running at the heels of the slower Peksa, both were able to score for a 2 run HR to take the lead. This was more than enough for Mallonee, who added another strike out in the game and held the Stingers scoreless for the final 4 innings and giving GM a desperately needed sweep.
