Week #8 -- June 1, 2014

Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire- Reggie Grant
Game 1: Green Machine 19 (WP-John Reichert 2-3)  Thunderbirds 13 (LP-Harry Kinsey 1-3)

The Thunderbirds took the field first as GM opened up to a quick 6-0 lead. The Birds would respond with a free pass to Jeff Kapper, a single by Mike Silverman and a double by Gary Bosley (scoring Kapper and Silverman). Consecutive passes to Jake Neville and Tony Barner would juice the bases. Zach Neville then doubled Bosley and Jake in. Kenny Kreyling would plate Barner and Zach with a single to tie the game at 6 after 1.

Both teams went scoreless in the 2nd. GM added 4 (3rd) and 1 (4th) to take a 11-6 lead into the bottom of 4. The Birds would bring a run in as Harry Kinsey singled and scored on Bosley's FC. GM 11- TB 7. GM would get 2 more in in the top half of the 5th but The Birds would add 1 of their own as Zach tripled to deep LC and scored on Kreyling's RBI single. After 5, GM 13-TB 8.

GM put a little more distance in the score bringing in 5 in the 6th to take a 18-8 lead but The Birds would get going again with consecutive singles from James Castellano, Kinsey, and Kapper to load the bases. Silverman was issued a free pass scoring Castellano. Jake would get a free pass to bring in Kinsey. Silverman then would come in on Barner's FC.

Zach plated Bosley with a SAC FLY to close the gap a little more. Kreyling singled Jake in for The Birds final run in game 1. GM added 1 in the 7th to take the opener, 19-13.

Game 2:  Thunderbirds 7 (WP-Lenny Fields 2-4 )  Green Machine 6 (LP-Bob Mallonee 3-4)

The second game began as GM took the field and held The Birds scoreless in the 1st before scoring 2 times in the bottom. In the top of the 2nd, The Birds would load the bases on singles (Zach Neville and Kenny Kreyling) and a ROE (Lenny Fields). Dana Anderson would double in Zach and Kreyling. Next, Maurice Jamison would single in Fields and Anderson. Gary Bosley's FC would bring Jamison in as The Birds took a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the 2nd. GM added 1 in the bottom half to make the score 5-3. Both teams went silently in the 3rd.

GM would take the lead as they scored 3 times in the bottom of the 4th to go up 6-5. In the top of the 5th, The Birds would fight back as Jake Neville doubled and scored on Kreyling's RBI double to tie the game at 6. The Birds defense settled in and held GM to an egg in the bottom half. In the top of 7, Jeff Kapper ROE. The next batter, Mike Silverman singled scoring Kapper to give The Birds a 7-6 lead heading into the crucial bottom of the 7th.

The Birds defense shut down the top of GM's lineup to take the second game 7-6 and split the day's action.

Northwest Regional Park Field 2:    Umpire- Mark Radom
Game 1: Bombers 16 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 8-3)  Outlaws 0 (LP-Larry Newman 0-6)  (4 Innings)

The Nationwide Insurance Bombers pushed their winning streak to 6 games by pounding the Outlaws 16-0 (4 innings) and 23-4 (5 innings). Tzvi Friedman won both games and Gershon Y relieved in both games. Game 1 highlights- The Bombers sent 10 men to the plate in the 1st and 3rd innings. Tzvi Friedman hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 4th off Nemo in the bottom of the 4th to end the game.

Game 2:  Bombers 22 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 9-3)  Outlaws 4 (LP-Larry Newman 0-7)  (5 Innings)

In game 2, the Outlaws actually led 2-0 in the 1st. Mark Loeb had 4 doubles (a Bombers record). In a scary moment, Ben Gutman lined a ball off Nemo’s knee and it caromed over the Bombers fence by 3rd base. It was correctly ruled a ground rule double. It was the first time Ben Gutman hit a ball over the fence after 10 years and over 300 games played in the Pikesville Softball League. Nemo came out of the game but went back in an inning later. He definitely deserves the courage award for the day. Even though his team was getting beat pretty badly, he never quits. The Bombers are now 1 game behind the Kings, a team they swept the week before.

Game 1: Northwest Corridor 8 (WP-Ted Winner 5-2)  Natty O's 5 (LP- RJ Seabeck 5-8)

Game 2:  Natty O's 15 (WP-RJ Seabeck 6-8)  Northwest Corridor 1 (LP- Howard Goldberg 3-4) 5 Innings

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:      Umpire- Jeff Kurland

Game 1: Kings 6 (WP-Mike Herr 9-1)  Sky & Sky Inc. 3 (LP-Jeff Harris 10-1) 

In a re-match of the 2013 PMSL Finals, the Kings and Sky & Sky Inc. met to battle for first place. The Kings took the opener 6-3 in a ballgame that lasted just about 1 hour. The quick pace was thanks to errorless fielding and pitching by Kings Mike Herr and Sky Jeff Harris that allowed just 1 walk each.

In b-1st, with 1 out Kenny Salzman and 1 out later Arin Gelletly hit an RBI single. In t-3rd, Brian Sky drew a leadoff walk, Shaun Poulton doubled, and Mark Lester hit a SF to left field to tie game 1-1. In t-4th, Elliott Blank singled with 1 out and Pat Wilcox launched a deep 2 RBI HR over the fence in RCF giving Sky 3-1 lead.

The score remained 3-1 into b-5th. Glenn Savage and Steve Levy hit 1 out singles. Following a fielder's choice groundout for the 2nd out, Mike Herr hit an RBI 2B to cut lead in half. Following a walk to EH Chuck Grant, Koby Sarubin hit an RBI 1B to knock in the tie run 3-3.

Sky threatened to again take lead in t-6th with singles by Matt Holley and Blank to put runners on the corners with 1 out. The Kings were able to get out of the inning without allowing a run on an infield popout and flyout. In b-6th 4 consecutive singles to start the inning by Shilo Merwitz, Gelletly, Michael Kleeman, and Troy Hendricks (2 RBI) put Kings ahead 5-3. 2 more singles by Steve Levy and Brad Millison (RBI) made the Kings lead 6-3.

In t-7th, 1 out singles by Brian Sky and Poulton brought the tie run to the plate. Herr was able to get out of the inning on a groundout to third base and lineout to second base, preserving a 6-3 win for the Kings.

Game 2: Sky & Sky Inc. 6 (WP-Jeff Harris 11-1)  Kings 3 (LP-Chuck Grant 1-1) 

The Kings game 1 victory put them in a 1st place tie with Sky and with the tie-breaker, a very temporary hold on the position. Sky moved back into the standings lead with a 6-3 win in the nightcap. Jeff Harris outdueled Chuck Grant in game 2.

Scoreless into t-3rd, 1 out 1B by Koby Sarubin, RBI 2B by Kenny Salzman, and RBI 1B by Shilo Merwitz gave Kings 2-0 lead. In b-3rd,
Mike Deutchendorf reached on an outfield error, advanced on a Jeff Harris 1B, and scored on SF by Shaun Poulton.

In b-4th, Andy Vanlandingham tripled, Pat Wilcox walked, Brian Sky hit an RBI 1B to tie score 2-2 and 1 out later,
Deutchendorf singled to give Sky 3-2 lead. Sky extended lead with 3 runs in b-5th. Key hits were 2 RBI 2B by Vanlandingham and RBI 1B by Andy Bloom. Sky lead after 6 innings was 6-2.

In t-7th, singles by Grant, Sarubin, and Shilo Merwitz narrowed lead to 6-3 with 1 out, but an infield lineout and groundout closed out the game with Sky winning 6-3.

Kings game notes:

The Kings were without the services of Jan Katzen, Brett Eisenberg, and Alan Varhaftik. Varhaftik has missed the past 8 games following hernia surgery, but he has continued to come out each week to keep the scorebook and support his teammates.
Troy Hendricks' 6th inning 1B in game 1 was his 300th career Kings (and PMSL) hit.
Kenny Salzman's 2B in inning 3 of game 2 was his 500th career Kings hit.
