Northwest Regional Park Field 1:    Umpire- Reggie Grant
Game 1: Bombers 14 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 10-3)  Thunderbirds 0 (LP-Mike Silverman 0-1) (5 Innings)

The Bombers scored 3, 3, 1, and 7 runs to take the opener 14-0 in 5 innings against an 8 player Thunderbirds squad.

The Bombers pushed their winning streak to 8 with a doubleheader sweep of the Thunderbirds. It didn’t help the Thunderbirds that they only had 8 players to start game 1. Tzvi Friedman led the way in game 1 with a 2 hit shutout in a 16-0 victory that mercifully ended after 4 innings. After the Thunderbirds went quietly in the top of the 1st, the Bombers struck for 3 in the bottom of the inning. Gershon Y doubled to lead off followed by 4 straight walks. Loeb’s SAC fly made it 3-0. The Bombers scored 3 more in the 2nd of Gershon’s HR into the RF corner. It was the first of his 3 HR’s on the day (also chipped in 12 RBI’s). Mikie Georgie’s bases loaded walk made it 7-0 in the 3rd. the Bombers scored 9 in the 4th to end the game.

Flamm led off with a double and Loeb’s grounder was booted to make it 8-0. Finkelstein and Friedman followed with an RBI single and double and later in the inning, Shad walked to load the bases, and then Gershon hit a walk off grand slam. It was the 2nd week in a row that the Bombers ended game 1 with a walk off grand slam which is believed to be a Pikesville Softball record.

Game 2:  Bombers 15 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 11-3)  Thunderbirds 5 (LP-Gary Bosley 0-1)

The 2nd game was more competitive with the Bombers coming away with the sweep 15-5. Friedman pitched another great game and the always solid Bomber’s defense dominated. Assistant Manager, Gabe Silber puled all the right strings to move the Bombers within 1 game of the Kings and Sky at 12-4. The Bombers are 3rd in the league in runs scored and have allowed the fewest runs in the league. The Bombers struck for 2 in the first on Flamm’s SAC fly and Loeb’s RBI double. The Tbirds scored 2 in the first on a bases loaded error by Flamm but took control in the 2nd. Parry tripled leading off and after a walk to Dan Gutman, Gershon singled and the Mikie hit a HR. After a Ben Gutman walk, Flamm hit a long HR to RF. Finkelstein hit a solo shot in the 5th and Yakabovitch a 3 run blast. The Bombers play the Natty O’s this week.

The Birds took the field with 8 again to start the second game. The Bombers scored twice. In the bottom half, The Birds would load the bases on consecutive single from Jeff Kapper, Mike Silverman, and Nick Perehinec. Silverman came in on Gary Bosley's FC. dana Anderson would single in Perehinec to tie the game at 2. The Bombers plated 7 (2nd) and 2 (3rd) to go up 11-2. In the bottom of the 3rd, Anderson would single and score on Brandon Boston's RBI single to make it 11-3. In the 4th, the Bombers went silently as The Birds scored once when Jake Neville doubled and came in 2 batters later on Perehinec's SAC FLY. Green Machine came into the day just 3 games behind NWC for 4th place in the league hoping to close the gap. GM started out firing with a Nick Serkes triple driving in Josh Vaeth followed by a Mkie Randall RBI single to plate Serkes. After NWC put up 7 runs in the bottom of the inning, GM fought back with 6 consecutive hits from Mark Winkel, Logan Malane (with a base hit in his first career at bat), Jonathan Stacey, John Reichert, Vaeth, and finished off by a 2 RBI double from Serkes. NWC again made the green men pay for poor defense by putting up 10 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd to make it a 17-6 game after 2. GM did get an inside the park home run from Stacey after he hit a ball that almost went through the fence, but NWC was able to add a run in the 3rd and 4th innings to complete the game prematurely.

Game 2:  Green Machine 10 (WP-Bob Mallonee 4-4)  Northwest Corridor 4 (LP-Ted Winner 5-3)

After NWC made quick work of game 1, came back determined in game 2. Ace pitcher Bob Mallonee kept NWC scoreless for the first 3 innings, even surviving 2 errors in the first inning. GM GM was not able to score any runs in the first despite loading the bases, but the 2nd inning was a different story altogether. After lead off singles from Andy Peksa and Billy Giles, rookie Malane continued to show a strong debut crushing a triple to left field that only needed to be a foot higher to go out of the park. Malane was able to score on the next play thanks to an RBI groundout by Mallonee to give GM a 3-0 lead. The greenies were able to add a 4th run in the 3rd inning thanks to a lead off triple from the sizzling Stacey followed by a sac fly from Brad Verbosky. NWC was able to chip away at the lead with 2 runs in the 4th and another in the top of the 5th, but GM was not to be out done on the day. Serkes led off the bottom of the 5th inning with his 6th consecutive hit on the day on a double, followed by a Matt Boden walk, a Winkel RBI ground out, and a big 2 RBI triple from Andy Peksa. Giles came through with a clutch RBI single to plate Peksa and make it an 8-3 lead. GM was able to add 2 insurance runs in the 6th inning thanks to a lead off walk by Mallonee and a 2 out inside the park HR from Boden. NWC was able to score a run in the top of the 7th off of 2 more GM errors, but not even they could blow a comfortable lead finishing the game 10-4.

Hits from Kris Stahle, Nick Meyer, RJ Seabeck, Rob Medoff, Matt Bratter and Justin Bullock would knock starting pitcher Jeff Harris from the game after just 1 inning. Sky would battle back as they always do but the O’s came through with 2 runs in the 5th and another big inning in the 6th, scoring 7 and putting the game out of reach. Brett's 4 hit today was his best in a Kings uniform.
While allowing just 5 singles in game 1, starter Mike Herr also issued an uncharacteristic 5 walks. The 5 walks is the most he has issued since game 1 on July 12, 1992.

In that game almost 22 years ago played at Pikesville Middle School Field #4 with Ken Seaman as the umpire, Herr issued 6 walks and the Kings lost to Weinapple 7-5. The starting pitcher for Weinapple that day was Larry Newman. Current Kings Alan Varhaftik, Steve Levy, Kenny Salzman, and Mike Herr played in that game. Herr walked the first 3 batters of the game-- Bruce Stone, Jeff Slutzker, and Terry Beck. Lee Eidelberg's RBI groundout brought home the first run. Dave Schwartz followed with a 2 RBI 1B giving Weinapple 3-0 lead. Kings came back with 5 runs in b-1st. Consecutive singles by Varhaftik, Levy, Detour Dave Sandler loaded bases with 0 outs. Barry Foland hit a 2 RBI 2B. Following 2 groundouts and another run, Mike Herr and Kenny Salzman both hit 2 out RBI singles to give Kings 5-3 lead. Weinapple scored 1 run in t-3rd and another in t-6th to tie score 5-5. In t-7th, Ben Lyons walked to lead off inning. Following flyouts by Wayne Berger and Tim Lott, Larry Newman was due up with Lyons still at first base and 2 outs. Juan pinch-hit for Newman and singled to RCF. Kings RCF Alan Varhaftik misplayed the ball and both Lyons and Juan were able to score on the play, giving Weinapple 7-5 lead. In Kings b-7th, Larry Getlan grounded out to start inning. Mike Herr singled. Salzman flew out to RCF and Marc Goldstein was due up for the Kings. Brad Lamont was brought in to pinch hit for Goldstein and grounded out to end ballgame.

Herr, battling wrist tendonitis, was yanked from the Kings pitching rotation after that start and did not make another pitching appearance for the Kings until 1999.
Team Weinapple finished 2nd in the Regular Season behind Attman's Deli, but they were upset in the first 2 Rounds of the 1992 Playoffs and the team disbanded. 3 players from Team Weinapple joined the Kings for the 1993 season -- pitcher Larry Newman, shortstop Jeff Slutzker, and outfielder Dave Schwartz. With the addition of those players, the Kings won the 1993 PMSL Regular Season and Playoffs for the first time in the team's history.
