Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 12 (WP-Jay Walle 2-2)  Green Machine 7 (LP-John Reichert 2-5)

Sky & Sky had just 10 players, and missing several key players, and knew Green Machine would make it a tough day. Jay Walle took the hill for Sky, and Green Machine quickly took the lead, with two runs in the first inning. Sky got one back in the bottom of the inning, with Steve Truitt scoring on a sac fly from Elliot Blank. Green Machine didn’t score in the 2nd, and Sky tied it up, with Jay Walle scoring on a 2 out base hit from Eric Radom. Green Machine got the lead back in the top of the 3rd with a run, and then Sky took the lead for good with 3 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Andy Bloom had a two run triple to score Holley and Blank, and then Poulton scored Bloom on a sac fly, to give Sky a 5-3 lead after 3. Walle held the Green Machine in check in the top of the 4th, and Sky scored 4 more to take a 9-3 lead, with Blank knocking in two runs on a base hit. Green Machine didn’t score in the top of the 5th, and Sky tacked on one more. GM continued to fight, scoring 2 in the 6th, to make it 10-5, and Sky responded with 2 of their own. In the top of the 7th, Green Machine threatened, with 2 more, but Sky was able to hold on, 12-7. After going 8-8 the previous week, Andy Bloom continued his torrid hitting, going 4-4, batting in the 5 spot.

ith both teams missing key players, the Green Machine vs. Sky & Sky match up seemed to be a battle of attrition throughout the day. GM got on the board early thanks to a single from Matt Boden, a double from Jonathan Stacey, and a 2 RBI blooper from Brad Verbosky. Sky tied the game with 1 run in the 1st and 2nd innings, but GM was able to reclaim the lead on a lead off single from pitcher John Reichert which culminated with an RBI sac fly from clean up hitter Mike Randall. Sky came back firing, scoring 3 runs in the 3rd, 4 in the 4th, and 1 in the 5th to take a commanding lead. GM was able to claw back in the 6th inning thanks to a lead off hustle double from Randall, a single from pinch hitter Andy Peksa, an RBI single from Logan Malane, and a sac fly from Billy Giles. GM continued to put pressure on in the 7th inning with Reichert getting another single, Boden reaching on an error, and a big 2 RBI double from Stacey. However, the attempted comeback fell short and Sky was able to take game 1.

Game 2:  Sky & Sky Inc. 5 (WP-Jay Walle 3-2)  Green Machine 4 (LP-Bob Mallonee 4-5)

Game 2 was much different than the first. Green Machine jumped out to an early lead, scoring 4 in the first inning. Sky was held in check for nearly the entire game. After 5 innings, GM was still leading 4-0. In the top of the 6th, Holley led off with a triple. Elliot Blank followed with an infield single, with Holley staying at 3B. Bloom singled to knock in Holley for Sky’s first run. Shaun Poulton singled to load the bases. Aaron Birenbaum hit a grounder to short, with Blank scoring on the play, but a wild throw allowed Aaron to reach base. Andy Bloom tried to score from second and was thrown out at the plate. Jay Walle then helped his own cause with an RBI single to score Poulton, and Birenbaum moved to third. With one out, Marc Lester hit a sac fly to tie the game, 4-4. GM was held scoreless in the bottom of the 6th. In the top of the 7th with the score tied, Radom led the inning off with a base hit. Truitt hit into a fielders choice, Holley singled, and then Blank it a grounder to 2B, that appeared to be a double play that would have ended the inning, but was called safe at 1B. Andy Bloom came to the plate with runners on first and third, and after going 7-7 on the day, he was given the intentional walk. Shaun Poulton then came through with a clutch line drive to center to score Truitt, giving Sky a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the inning. GM had a runner on 1B in the bottom of the 7th, but Walle was able to induce a ground out to third to end the game.

GM continued their trend throughout the year of scoring in the first inning by putting up 4 runs to start the game. Lead off hitter Josh Vaeth walked for the 3rd time on the day, followed by a Chris Goodwin single, a Randall RBI single, Peksa RBI single, and a single by Giles to load the bases. Skyler Dickinson, fresh off the DL where he has missed the last 3 weeks of action, came through with a clutch 2 out 2 RBI single to score Randall and Peksa. Ace pitcher Bob Mallonee held Sky & Sky to 0 runs over the first 5 innings of game 2, constantly keeping the blue hitters off balance as well as GM backing Mallonee up with fantastic outfield defense. GM blew plenty of chances to add more runs, getting 2 men on base in the 3rd and 6th innings and loading the bases in the 2nd and 5th innings. Unfortunately, none of these opportunities resulted in any runs for the untimely green bats. In the top of the 6th inning, Sky finally strung their hits together resulting in 4 runs to tie the game. The action really got interesting in the top of the 7th inning, when GM seemingly turned an inning ending double play to keep the game tied, however a hilarious blunder by the umpire meant that Sky & Sky were generously gifted another at bat. Sky was able to take advantage of this endowment when the next batter hit the go ahead RBI single. GM was able to get a lead off walk by Peksa to start the bottom of the 7th, but nobody else was able to contribute to the effort and Sky came away victorious.

Game 1: Bombers 7 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 12-3)  Natty O's 6 (LP- RJ Seabeck 6-10)

The Nationwide Insurance Bombers battled a tough Natty O’s team for their 5th straight doubleheader win and 10th win in a row. At 14-4, they remain one game back of Sky and the Kings. Tzvi Friedman earned 2 more wins and R.J. Seabeck took both loses. Both games were played at a high level and the Bombers refused to quit.

The Natty O’s jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game 1 in the top of the first. The Bombers stormed back with 5 in the 2nd to take a 5-4 lead. Flamm led off with a single to RF and after an error by the O’s, Friedman walked to load the bases. Meir Parry walked to drive in the first run. Dan Gutman then scorched a line drive down the RF line for a grand slam HR. It was the 3rd week in a row that the Bombers had a grand slam- a team record. The Bombers padded their lead in the 4th with a run. Shuli singled, Shad walked and then Parry hit a groundball (force out) to score Shulie. The Natty O’s tied it with 2 runs in the 5th and it stayed at 6-6 going into the bottom of the 7th.

With 2 outs, Bombers star LF Mikie Georgie drew a walk. Ben Gutman who thrives under pressure hit a drive down the RF line. Georgie came streaking home just beating the throw home for the hard fought win by the final score of 7-6.

The Natty O's jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to hits from 5 of the first 6 batters including Nick Meyer, RJ Seabeck, Rob Medoff, Justin Bullock and Matt Bratter.

The bombers wouldn't be down for long however putting together a 5 run inning of their own in the second. They would add another run in the 4th inning before the O's came back to tie the game in the 5th inning.

The game would stay tied until the bottom of the 7th when some aggressive base running by the bombers allowed them to score the final and winning run.

Natty O's Offensive Leaders:
Nick Meyer: 3-3, 3 1b, Run Scored
Matt Bratter: 3-3, 1b, 2b, 3b, 2 RBI
Rob Medoff: 1-2, 1b, 2 RBI, Run Scored

Game 2:  Bombers 9 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 13-3)  Natty O's 8 (LP- RJ Seabeck 6-11)  9 Innings

The Natty O’s jumped out again with 2 runs in the first. The Bombers literally knocked R. J. out of the game in the 1st. Gershon smashed a ball up the middle that hit him in the left arm and shot out to the 2nd baseman who caught the ball for the unlikely out. The Bombers tied it with 2 in the 2nd. Shulie singled, Gabe Silber singled and Friedman drew another walk (with his keen batting eye). Parry’s single to LCF made it 2-2. The Bombers then took a 4-2 lead with 2 more runs in the 3rd. Gershon walked, Mikie singled and Ben Gutman singled. Gershon apparently scored on the play but umpire, Scott Snyder called him out in a controversial play at the plate. Flamm then hit a long drive down the LF line to plate Mikie and Ben. R.J. toughed it out and reentered the game. The O’s tied it at 4-4 with 2 in the 4th.

The Bombers then retook the lead with a run in the 5th- the key hit, an RBI single by Mikie. Coach Smulson then hit a key double in the LCF gap and an error gave the O’s the lead at 6-5. The O’s tacked on another run in the 6th to make it 7-5. However, the Bombers wouldn’t quit. After one out, Yaaakov Lichter drove the ball over the CF’s head for a triple. Gershon hit an infield single but Lichter couldn’t score. Mikie had an RBI force out to cut the lead to 7-6 and then Ben stepped to the plate. The O’s weren’t thrilled to see their first game nemesis up with the game on the line. Gutman delivered again with a clutch double to score Georgie to knot it at 7-7. Flamm then rocked a ball up the middle that hit Gutman preventing him from scoring. Friedman seemed renewed and shut down the O’s in the 7th and 8th. The Bombers scored 2 in the 9th to take a 9-7 lead thanks to the Gutman twins. Friedman and Parry had back to back walks and Dan Gutman’s RBI single made it 8-7. Ben walked with the bases loaded to make it 9-7.

The O’s wouldn’t go away. They scored a run and had bases loaded with no outs. Flamm then started an amazing double play on a grounder to 3B. He stepped on the bag for the FO and then threw home to nail the potential tie run. Flamm then made a nice play and got the final out of the game on a force out to 3B.

The O's would take an early lead once again, this time with a 2 run first inning. In the bottom of the inning however, Natty O's starter RJ Seabeck took a line drive off his forearm and was forced to leave the game. The game was a literal see-saw battle for the next 6 innings, with both teams tying and or taking the lead numerous times before Jason Smulson put the O's up by 2 with a double in the 5th inning. RJ Seabeck was healthy enough to come back into the game when Rob Medoff has to leave early. The Bombers would just not go quietly into the night however as they scored the tying runs off a bloop single over the first baseman's head in the 7th. The teams would keep each other scoreless for 2 more innings before the Bombers put up 2 in the top of the 9th. The O's would then start a rally with RJ Seabeck and Jason Smulson both singling to start the inning. The Bombers would walk the next batter which worked out for them as the next batter chopped into a 5-1 double play and the O's couldn't capitalize enough to bring in the final run and lose a second heart breaker of the day.

Natty O's Offensive Leaders:
Sean Connely: 3-4, BB, 3 1b
Rob Medoff: 2-2, 1b, 2b, RBI, Run Scored
RJ Seabeck: 2-2, 2 1b, Run Scored
