Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 9 (WP-Jay Walle 1-0)  Northwest Corridor 4 (LP-Howard Goldberg 3-2)

Despite rain showers for almost 2 days prior to game time, league officers were out at the fields at the crack of dawn to ensure the Mother’s Day weekend games would be played as scheduled.

The last 2 PMSL Playoff Tournament Champions squared off against each other, NWC veteran Howard Goldberg took the mound against Jay Walle making his pitching debut for Sky & Sky. Sky&Sky managed just one hit in the 1st 2 innings but NWC started off hot. Goldberg’s double sent leadoff man Jon Herbst to 3rd base and Up Webb’s sac fly brought him home to open the scoring in the bottom of the 1st. John Karsos followed with an rbi single and Oliver Peterson delivered his own rbi base knock. NWC challenged again in the 2nd inning drawing 2 walks off Walle but 3 groundball fielder’s choices ruined the rally. Meanwhile Sky&Sky heated up on the top of the 3rd inning, finally getting on the board and taking the lead with a 4run inning. In the bottom half of the inning Karsos doubled home Goldberg and NWC tied the game up at 4 apiece. In the bottom of the 4th inning Alan Monico tripled to left field and almost scored off a Jason Weiner fielder’s choice up the middle but Jere Preston delivered a spot on throw home to earn the out and save a run. NWC went down in order in the 5th inning but were at it again in the 6th only to leave the bases loaded with zero runs scored. Sky & Sky managed just one hit off Goldberg from the 4th to 6th innings, but took advantage of two costly NWC errors in the top of the 7th to pull ahead 9-4. Once again NWC left 2 men in scoring position in the 7th but failed to score any runs. The defending champs took the opening game 9-4 in a close battle.

Sky & Sky took the opener 9-4. The game was tied at 4 until Sky & Sky broke through with 5 runs in the top of the 7th. Howard Goldberg held Sky scoreless in the top of the 1st. Jay Walle made his pitching debut for Sky. Sky’s defense promptly let him down, with an error on the first play of the game. Several well hit balls followed, and NWC took a 3-0 lead. Sky was held scoreless in the top of the 2nd. Walle escaped the 2nd inning without a run, despite walking two. In the top of the 3rd, Mike Deutchendorf led off the inning with a base hit liner to left, Mark Lester singled, Birenbaum flied out, and then Eric Radom singled to get Sky on the board. Matt Holley walked to load the bases, and Elliot Blank singled up the middle knocking in two. Andy Bloom singled to knock in Holley, but was thrown out at 2nd trying to take the extra base. NWC started the bottom of the 3rd with three consecutive singles, but managed just one run, tying the score at 4-4 at the end of the 3rd inning. Both pitchers settled in for the next few innings. In the top of the 7th, Jere Preston singled to lead off the inning for Sky. Brian Sky reached on a fielders choice, and Jay Walle singled to load the bases. Mike Deutchendorf delivered a double to left center to take the lead. Aaron Birenbaum, Eric Radom and Elliot Blank also knocked in runs to give Sky the 9-4 lead. Game 2:  Northwest Corridor 8 (WP-Ted Winner 4-1)  Sky & Sky Inc. 1 (LP-Jay Walle 1-1)

Both teams hit the ball well in the 1st inning, but unfortunately for Sky, that was all the offense they could muster. Ted Winner shut down the powerful Sky offense, inducing weak pop ups the entire game. In the top of the 1st, NWC pounded the ball, with several shots going to the fence. Sky was fortunate to allow just 3 in the inning. Sky got one back in the bottom half of the inning. NWC continued to hit, with 3 more in the top of the 2nd to take an early 6-1 lead. Sky had just one walk in the 2nd inning, and a single in the 6th inning. Apparently Sky was anxious to get home to their mothers & wives. NWC made it look easy, taking the second game 8-1.

Looking for a split after a disappointing game #1 loss, NWC started the scoring off quickly plating 3 top of the 1st inning runs. Goldberg tripled to the fence in left center, followed by an Up Webb single, doubles from Peterson and Karsos and a base hit line drive from Brad Rosenberg. Sky Sky managed one run off of NWC pitcher Ted Winner in the bottom of the inning. Into the 2nd, NWC’s bats stayed hot scoring another 3runs. Ted Winner was in control on the mound after the 1st inning allowing just one more hit and one walk for the next 6 innings. Rosenberg led off the 3rd inning with a double followed by a Monico double and a Ben Herbst liner to center. NWC once again had at least 2 runners on base in every inning but was only able to score again in the 7th inning as Walle limited the damage and kept the game close. In the end NWC was triumphant 8-1 to earn a doubleheader split, however they banged out 19 hits and were only able to score 8-runs, leaving 12 runners stranded on base.
