Opening day pitted the Nationwide Insurance Bombers (the “Flammys”) vs the Thunderbirds on a beautiful sunny day. The Thunderbirds had only 9 players and a new pitcher Matt Monto. The Bombers bats were on fire both games and they swept the doubleheader, 17-2 (4 innings) and 26-16. Tzvi Freidman won both games for the Bombers and was very sharp and full of energy even though his wife gave birth to a son this week.

Interesting Bombers notes- the Bombers had 2 sets of twins play for them in game 2 for the first time in their history, the Gutman twins and the Hochman twins. Also, Dan Gutman made his Pikesville debut in the 7th inning of game 2 . Nadav Spiegler made his return to the league after a 6 year layoff. Josh Resnick, Mikke Turiello and Shuiy Hochman made their Bomber debuts.

In game 1, the Bombers scored 7 in the first. Rashad Johnson led off with a single and Resnick hit an RBI double off the LF fence in his first at bat in the league. Flamm drove in the 2nd run with a single, and Shulie Hochman’s RBI single made it 3-0. Freidman helped his own cause with a single- 2 RBI’s and Gardner drove in the next 2 with a bases loaded single. The Birds scored 2 in the 2nd to cut the Bombers lead to 7-2. The Bombers answered with 4 more runs in the 2nd to take an 11-2 lead. With 1 out, Ben Gutman drew his 2nd walk, and Flamm followed with a walk. Shulie’s RBI double made it 8-2 and Freidman roped a single to drive in 2 more runs. Chaim Finkelstein singled and Spiegler hit a SF.

The Bombers tacked on 6 more runs in the 3rd. Turiello hit an INF single and Gardner walked. Shad hit an RBI single and Resnick’s SF drove in the Bombers 13th run. Ben hit an RBI single and after Flamm singled, Shulie drove in 2 more with a double. Freidman’s single drove home the final run (his 5th RBI) and the game ended after 4.

The 2015 season started as The Thunderbirds went silent in the 1st as the Bombers came in 7 times to take a 7-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds showed their heart by scoring 9 in the 5th , hitting the ball all over the field. The Bombers showed early season rust by also making 3 errors in the 5th to hamper Freidman’s pitching effort.

The Bombers came right back in the 6th to score 11 runs to make it 22-12. The Bombers scored 4 more in the 7th and the Birds fought back by scoring 4 in the 7th but the comeback was thwarted and the Bombers held on for the sweep.

Game 1: Sky & Sky Inc. 8 (WP-Jeff Harris 1-0)  Natty O's 6 (LP-RJ Seabeck 0-1)

On a beautiful opening day in Owings Mills, RJ Seabeck started fast, throwing 3 shutout innings to start the game. The O's would jump on Harris in the second inning scoring 3 runs in a rally started by Matt Bratter and followed up with back to back singles by Greg Barr and newcomer Matt Salmon. John Murphy would add a run with one of his two sacrifice flies on the day. Sky's bats would wake up as they usually do and take a 4-3 lead in the top of the 4th. The O's however, would come right back thanks to 4 straight runners reaching base with RJ, Bratter, Brad Wandel and Greg Barr again singling in the go ahead run. That would be all the offense the Natty O's could muster on the day, and Sky would score the final 4 runs of the game to take the opener 8-6.

Natty O's Offensive leaders:
Matt Bratter: 1-2, 2 Runs, BB
Greg Barr: 2-3, Run, RBI
Matt Salmon, 1-3, 2 RBI, Run
John Murphy 1-1, 2 RBI

Game 2:  Natty O's 8 (WP-RJ Seabeck 1-1)  Sky & Sky Inc. 0 (LP-Jeff Harris 1-1)

The O's would once again jump out to an early 3-0 lead after 2 innings with a first inning RBI by Matt Bratter and 2 runs in the second inning when John Murphy hit the O's first extra base hit of the season followed by a 2 RBI single by one of the O's new players John Christy. The Natty O's would continue to add at least 1 run in each of the final 4 innings, highlighted with a Matt Bratter RBI triple and the shortest single in the history of the Natty O's by Kris Stahle. Brad Wandell and Jonathan Veditz would both add sacrifice flies to lengthen the O's lead. RJ Seabeck in the meantime, was downright filthy. Changing speeds and holding the potent Sky lineup scoreless through 7 innings with solid defense behind him. Sky tried to mount a rally in the 8th when they had the bases loaded and no outs, but behind a great double play by Justin Bullock at third base, RJ and the O's were able to finish off the shutout and earn a split against Sky and Sky in the opening week.

Matt Bratter: 2-3, 2 RBI, Run, 3B

Andy Peksa returned as manager of L.O.F.T. and looked to lead his team to a 1-0 start in game 1. John Reichert took the hill in the top of the 1st for L.O.F.T. The Outlaws were able to get on the board early after a leadoff single was plated by a 2 out triple by Friedman. Reichert was able to strand the runner on 3rd and only allowing the Outlaws to score 1 run. In the bottom of the 1st L.O.F.T. went down quickly in order 1-2-3 to the crafty veteran pitcher Larry “Nemo” Newman. The Outlaws kept the bats going in the top of the 2nd as they were able to score 3 more runs to take a quick 4-0 lead. L.O.F.T. was able to get 2 runs back in the bottom half of the 2nd when Kenny Kreyling led off the inning with a base hit and was brought around score off of a Mike Randall RBI single. L.O.F.T. was able to hold the Outlaws scoreless in the top of the 3rd inning. Pitcher John Reichert led off the bottom of the 3rd with a base hit and was quickly lifted for courtesy runner Mike Randall, who later came around to score off a Brad Verbosky fielder’s choice. Kenny Kreyling got his first L.O.F.T. RBI with a sacrifice fly in the inning to bring home Mark Winkel knotting the score up at 4-4 after 3. The score remained the same until the top of the 6th inning when the Outlaws broke the tie by scoring 1 run to go up 5-4. L.O.F.T. was unable to score any runs in the bottom of the 6 leaving the score 5-4 Outlaws after 6 innings. L.O.F.T. was able to hold the Outlaws scoreless in the top of the 7th to give themselves a chance to tie with 1 run or walk it off by scoring 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Vaeth was able to get on base after an error by the Outlaws. Malane was then retired on a fly ball to left field leaving L.O.F.T. with only 2 outs. Veteran L.O.F.T. player, Pete Sclafani, stepped to the plate and smoked a line drive base hit to LCF that skipped under the glove of the LCF allowed Vaeth to come all the way around to score and tie the game. Skyler Dickinson was pinch hitting for Reichert and was retired on a fly ball to RF. With 2 outs and man on second it was all up to the manager of Green Machine to send the game into extra innings or end the game with a walk off. Mark “Wink” Winkel came up clutch by smoking a line drive past the Outlaws 3rd baseman and Sclafani came around to score to give L.O.F.T. the victory!

Opening day 2015 action kicks off on field 3, between rivals Outlaws against LOFT. The Outlaws step to the plate in the top of the first facing John Reichart for LOFT. Exciting rookie Martiez Reed leads it off with a single for his first career hit in the PMSL. 2 batters later David Woods grounds into a fielders choice. Next batter triple crown candidate Josh Friedman sends a shot to the fence for an RBI triple to score Woods from first to give the Outlaws a 1-0 lead. Larry Newman toes the bump for the Outlaws, and delivers as he does so many times a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning.

In the top of the 2nd, Theo Battle draws a leadoff walk. Darnell Maxwell follows that with a shot to the gap to for his first hit of the season for a stand up double. Reggie Molock busts it open with 2 RBI single to bring home Battle, and Maxwell. 2 batters later Larry Newman finds a hole to get a single, for his first hit of the season. 2 batters later Maurice Scott goes up the middle for a 2 out RBI single to plate Molock and extend the lead to 4-0. LOFT gets 2 back in the bottom half, one run scored due to a controversial call when the Outlaws left fielder made a diving catch which was blown, and said it hit the ground. Outlaws 4-2 after 2. LOFT ties it up scoring 2 in the 3rd. 4-4 after 3. Both teams put up goose eggs in the 4th and 5th.

Outlaws pick it up in the 6th as Reggie Molock gets his second hit of the game, with a 1 out single. Also making his debut, super rookie Hector Medina lines a double into left for his first PMSL hit. Harry Kinsey making his debut in an Outlaw uniform pinch hits for Newman an gets the job done getting an RBI fielders choice to score Molock and give the Outlaws a 5-4 lead. Newman holds LOFT in the bottom of the sixth with terrific pitching, and outstanding outfield defense.
Outlaws go down 1-2-3 in the bottom of seventh thanks to a gold glove play by the pitcher big John catching a hotshot off the bat of Woods with cat like reflexes, and doubling up the runner leaning off of first. LOFT then steps the plate and completes the comeback scoring 2 runs to take the first game 6-5 in a comeback fashion. Very well played game by both teams as LOFT steals game 1.

Coming off of its 1st win of the season L.O.F.T. was looking for the sweep. L.O.F.T. started out hot by scoring 3 runs off of RBI singles from Kreyling and Randall and a RBI fielder’s choice by Andy Peksa giving them a 3-0 lead after the top of the 1st. The Outlaws came back and scored one after a leadoff triple making it 3-1 after 1. A Nick Serkes sacrifice fly gave L.O.F.T. a 4-1 lead after the top of the 2nd. The Outlaws were able to take a 5-4 lead after 2 innings by scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning. L.O.F.T. quickly came back by scoring 4 of their own in the top of the 3rd, highlighted by a Dana Anderson RBI double, Skyler Dickinson RBI single and a MVPete 2 RBI single to take a 8-5 lead after 3. L.O.F.T. came right back in the top of the 4th and plated 7 runs to take a 15-5 lead. Mike Randall with a 2 RBI single and Sclafani with a bases clearing 3 RBI double were the highlights of the 4th. L.O.F.T. held the Outlaws scoreless in the bottom of the 4th and 5th as the Outlaws held L.O.F.T. scoreless in the 5th. L.O.F.T. was able to tack on one more run in the top of the 6th giving them a 16-5 lead. The Outlaws would not go away though as they were able to plate 5 runs in the bottom of the 6th off of some good hitting combined with some bad bounces in the outfield. L.O.F.T. could not score in the top of the 7th and held a 16-10 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th. The Outlaws were able to score 1, but L.O.F.T. shut them down there to finish off the sweep with a 16-11 victory.

In Game 2 LOFT kept the momentum going facing new free agent acquisition Harry Kinsey scoring 3 runs to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the 1st, Martiez Reed keeps his bat hot leading it off with a triple. Reggie Molock brings him home with an RBI sac fly to bring the Outlaws within 2 3-1 after 1. LOFT pads their lead by adding 1 in the second to make it 4-1.

Outlaws fight back in the bottom of the second, when David Woods gets his first hit of the season with a leadoff single. 2 batters later Darnell Maxwell singles. Maurice Scott legs out an infield single to juice the bases for Kinsey. Kinsey burns a drawn in outfield with a shot into left for a 2 RBI double to score Woods, and Maxwell. Kinsey credits the added strength to drinking his muscle milk before the at-bat. 2 batters later that man again, Martiez Reed delivers a 2 out 2 RBI single to give the Outlaws a brief 5-4 lead. The Outlaws lose a key player after the inning due to a prior commitment which would change the outlook of there defense, and deemed to be costly as LOFT scored 4 in the 3rd, and 4 in the 4th to stretch the lead to 15-5 after 5.

The Outlaws showed a ton of toughness, and fight which really showed how far they've come from their inaugural season, as they batted around and scored 5 more to bring the score to 16-10. Molock doubles, Friedman gets an RBI double to score Molock. Woods doubles to score Friedman. Battle gets a double of his own to score Woods. Scott singles to score Battle. Kinsey singles. Newman RBI groundout to score Scott.
