Game 1: Thunderbirds 9 (WP- Matt Monto 2-3) LOFT 8 (LP-Bob Mallonee 1-3)
L.O.F.T. took the field Sunday morning looking over at a lot
of familiar faces on the Thunderbirds sideline managed by former L.O.F.T. member
Jeff Kapper. Another former L.O.F.T. member Matt Monto toed the rubber for the
Thunderbirds and was able to keep the L.O.F.T. hitters off balance for the most
part in game 1. He kept them from mounting any type of offensive momentum.
L.O.F.T. was able to get out to a 6-1 lead before the Thunderbirds were able to
take advantage of sloppy fielding by L.O.F.T. as they plated 7 runs in the 5th
inning to take a 8-6 lead. L.O.F.T. battled back and tied it up at 8-8 after 6
innings. The Thunderbirds scored a run in the top of the 7th to take a 9-8 lead.
L.O.F.T. got a leadoff single from Nick Serkes, but the next 3 batters were
retired in order giving the Thunderbirds the victory in game 1.
Game 2: LOFT 15 (WP- Andy Peksa 1-0) Thunderbirds 2 (LP-Matt Monto 2-4) 5 Innings
After playing their worst game of the year, L.O.F.T. was able to bounce back in game 2. With L.O.F.T. pitcher John Reichert out for game 2 they looked to Andy Peksa to take the hill in his first start of the year. Behind, what was described as a fastball that gained between 6-7 mph in velocity, Peksa was able to keep the Thunderbirds hitters off balance as they were only able to muster 2 runs in game 2. It was not just Peksa that led to L.O.F.T. holding its opponent to 2 runs; stellar defense and great pitch calling behind the plate by Pete Sclafani allowed Peksa to hold the Thunderbirds in check. The L.O.F.T. bats came alive in game 2 as they were able to plate 15 runs in 5 innings highlighted by a Jonathan Stacey 3 run inside the park homerun to give L.O.F.T. the victory in 5 innings. It was a great bounce back effort by L.O.F.T. after the poor showing they had in game 1.
