Game 1: LOFT 12 (WP-Kenny Kreyling 1-0 )  Outlaws 0 (LP-Larry Newman 0-1)  5 Innings

L.O.F.T. took the field in Game 1 with Kenny Kreyling on the mound for the first time in his career. Kreyling was looking to have a positive outing after a long offseason of working hard on his pitching. Despite 3 ugly errors by third baseman Brad Verbosky, Kreyling was able to hold the Outlaws scoreless in the top of the 1st inning. L.O.F.T. leadoff hitter, Mark Winkel, wasted no time getting his bat going on the new season by roping a leadoff double. Winkel eventually scored after a Verbosky blooper fell and the Outlaws made a throwing error giving L.O.F.T. a 1-0 lead after 1. Kreyling came back out in the top of the 2nd and held the Outlaws scoreless once again. In the bottom of the 2nd L.O.F.T. was able to plate 6 runs behind a sacrifice fly from Logan Malane, a RBI single from Winkel, a 2 RBI double from Dana Anderson, a RBI triple from Kreyling and a RBI single from Nick Serkes. After helping his own cause, Kreyling came back out in the top of the 3rd and once again held the Outlaws scoreless. L.O.F.T. scored 5 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning off of a Jonathan Stacey RBI triple, a Malane RBI single, a Pete Sclafani RBI single and a 2 RBI single from Kreyling to give L.O.F.T. an 11-0 lead after 3 innings. Kreyling kept working his magic on the mound as he mixed his pitches nicely and kept the Outlaws scoreless yet again. L.O.F.T. needed 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to finish off the game, but was unable to score any runs in that inning as they stranded the bases loaded. In the top of the 5th inning Kreyling needed 3 outs to secure a victory via the 12 run rule. He earned his first career strikeout when he threw back to back cutters to strike out Outlaws pitcher Larry Newman. After seeing Verbosky struggle in the field, Manager Andy Peksa, made a defensive adjustment and put himself at third base. The move paid off as he fielded a ground ball cleanly to get the 3rd and final out of the inning and the game. In Kreyling’s first time on the mound in his career, he earned a win and a shutout. Kreyling also got through his first game with 1 strikeout and 0 walks.

Offensive Stars for LOFT:
Mark Winkel: 2-2; 2B, 3 R, RBI, BB
Kenny Kreyling: 2-3; 3B, R, 3 RBI
Brad Verbosky: 2-3

Game 2:   LOFT 24 (WP-Jonathan Stacey 1-0)  Outlaws 12 (LP-Harry Kinsey 0-1)

L.O.F.T. looked to continue the momentum they built in game 1 of the double header. This time they sent another rookie pitcher to the mound in Jonathan Stacey. Stacey also spent several months of the offseason working on his pitching and he was ready to test it out against the Outlaws. L.O.F.T. was the visitor’s in this game and they looked to give Stacey a lead before taking the mound. They were unable to do so as the Outlaws held L.O.F.T. scoreless in the top of the 1st. In the bottom of the 1st inning the Outlaws were able to string together some hits and score 2 runs to take a 2-0 lead. L.O.F.T. bounced right back in the top of the 2nd inning and plated 5 runs of their own highlighted by a Jake Barnes leadoff triple, a Jonathan Stacey double, a Logan Malane triple and Andy Peksa double to take a 5-2 lead half way through the 2nd. Stacey settled in nicely in the 2nd inning and kept the Outlaws off the board. L.O.F.T. looked to add to their lead in the top of the 3rd, but was unsuccessful in doing so. The Outlaws hung up 2 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to cut the L.O.F.T. lead to 5-4. In the top of the 4th inning however, L.O.F.T. was able to widen their lead by plating 5 runs. Dana Anderson plated 3 runs with a long single, Kreyling drove 1 in with a single of his own and Serkes drove in another with a triple to deep left center field making it a 10-4 game. After being given a 6 run lead by his offense, Stacey came out and held the Outlaws scoreless. L.O.F.T. was then unable to do anything in the top of the 5th inning. The Outlaws clawed closer in the bottom of the 5th inning with 2 runs to cut it to 10-6. In the top of the 6th inning L.O.F.T. was able to bust the game wide open by scoring 12 runs. The big blows in the 6th inning came off the bats of Jake Barnes and Dana Anderson. Barnes smoked a high line drive over the LCF fence for a grand slam and Anderson launched a high fly ball over the CF fence for a 2 run home run. This gave L.O.F.T. a 24-6 lead. The Outlaws would not go away as they plated 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to extend the game to the 7th inning. Barnes once again put on a show with an inside the park home run on a line shot to the RF fence and he cruised around the bases. Stacey held the Outlaws in check in the bottom of the 7th inning to earn his first win of the season in his debut on the mound.

Northwest Regional Park Field 4:    Umpire-  Jeff Kurland
Game 1: Northwest Corridor 12 (WP-Howard Goldberg 1-0) Kings 5 (LP-Mike Herr 0-1)

We were finally blessed with some great softball weather and able to start the PMSL 2016 season. NWC faced off with familiar opening day opponents, the defending champion Kings. Game one started out as usual early low scoring affair. NWC did put one across in the 3rd when Brian Bandurchin blooped a single into right field scoring Mike O’Leary. NWC had a big 4th inning off of veteran pitcher Mike Herr, plating 5 runs. Joe Kramer tripled home Up Webb followed by an Adam Silverman double to plate Kramer. Brad Rosenberg singled home Silverman and two batters later Aaron Birenbaum drilled a 2rbi double to deep centerfield. NWC managed to score one more in the 5th and then 4 more in the 6th inning and a final insurance run in the 7th inning. NWC took the 1st game of the doubleheader 12-4 and gave team manager and pitcher Howard Goldberg his 1st win of the young season.

Game 2:  Northwest Corridor 6 (WP-Ted Winner 1-0) Kings 0 (LP-Shilo Merwitz 0-1)

NWC veteran pitcher Ted Winner square off against longtime King Shilo Merwitz. Winner relied on his defense behind him and they picked him up big time repeatedly making tough plays to deny Kings batters of forming a rally. The game was a close battle through 5 innings with NWC ahead 3-0. In the 6th inning NWC was able to put across 3 insurance runs to take a 6-0 lead. Brad Garfield drove home Silverman and Webb with a double and Goldberg knocked Garfield home with a single to left field. Winner enjoyed the shutout and I believe this was the NWC franchise’s 1st ever sweep of The Kings.
