Game 1: Nationwide Bombers 5 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 3-0)
Kings 1 (LP-
Shilo Merwitz 0-1)
The Pikesville/ Owings Mills Men’s Softball league members woke up on
Sunday morning and had to pinch themselves. Was it a dream? Did the rain
actually hold off and would we play for the first time since May 6th?
With the answer being that playing was a reality, the 2 time- defending
Bombers went back to work and swept the Kings to move to 4-0. Game 1 was
a 5-1 victory for the Bombers and in the nightcap, the Bombers won in
dramatic fashion in the bottom of the 8th 10-9. Tzvi Friedman moved his
record to 4-0 while Shiloh Merwitz took both loses. There was a lot on
the line. The Bombers had beaten the Kings in the championship, 2 years
in a row , while getting knocked out of the playoffs by the Kings
several times in the past.
In game 1, the Bombers came out strong to take a 3-0 lead. Gershon
Jakobavitch hit a leadoff triple and came home on Yoyo’s double. Ben’s
FO to CF moved Yoyo to 3rd and team owner, David Flamm’s GO made it 2-0.
Shulie Hochman then ripped a triple and came home on an OF overthrow.
The Kings had several baserunners but Friedman kept shutting the door.
The Bomber’s reliable defense also pitched in, led by Ben Gutman who
seemed to be a ball magnate in LF.
The Bombers pushed the lead to 4-0 in the 5th. Tzvi hit an INF single
and after Dan Gutman’s FO , with 2 out, Uri Rabinowitz laced a double
and Gutman came around to score on another King’s error. The Kings came
back in the bottom of the 5th and scored their run on a Savage SF to LF.
Friedman held on and the Bombers tacked on their 5th and final run on
Hochman’s RBI single scoring speedster, Jakobavitch.
Game 2: Nationwide Bombers 10 (WP-Tzvi Friedman 4-0) Kings 9 (LP- Shilo Merwitz 0-2) 8 Innings
In game 2, Sarubin led off for
the Kings and hit a liner to Flamm in the shift. Saltman hit a triple but the
kings didn’t score. The Bombers scored 2 in the bottom of the 1st. Gershon led
off with a double and Yoyo’s RBI single made it 1-0. Yoyo went to 2nd on his hit
on another Kings error. Ben brought home Yoyo with an RBI single. The Kings tied
it up at 2-2 in the 2nd , thanks to a botched rundown by the Bombers. In the
3rd, the Bombers threatened but 1st B, Steve Levy made an absolutely awesome
pick of a wicked groundball by Yoyo to keep the Bombers off the board. The
defensive gem seemed to spark the Kings and they took their first lead of the
day, by scoring 3 in in the 4th for a 5-2 lead.
The Bombers came right back and scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th. After 2 outs,
Dan singled. Chaim Finkelstein tripled to make it 5-3 and Paul Auster’s triple
made it 5-4. Max Cantor singled home Auster to make it 5-5. The Bombers took the
lead back by scoring 3 more in the 5th to make it 8-5. Ben and Flamm hit back to
back doubles, Hochman tripled to the fence and Friedman’s scorching FO scored
Hochman.
One thing the Bombers and the league know about the Kings- they NEVER quit. They
scored 2 in the 6th and 1 in the 7th to make it 8-8. New league rules mandated
that when a game goes extra innings, the batter automatically starts with a 1-1
count. The Kings scored in the top of the 8th to make it 9-8. The Bombers dug
deep and grabbed a dramatic victory. Gershon was on 1st and with 2 outs, Yoyo
blooped a triple scoring Gershon. Ben and Flamm were walked to load the bases.
Hochman strode up to the plate ready to roll. The Kings played a shift oh him
expecting him to pull the ball into the shift. Instead, he went with the pitch
and hit a hard line drive to RCF scoring Yoyo for the doubleheader sweep.
Notes:
Paul Auster made a great diving, sliding catch on a ball in RF and Flamm made a
very difficult 3B to 1B double play.
